There is also a monument on the Galibier in memory of Henri Desgrange, the first director of the Tour de France.

Col du Galibier

Because the Galibier can only be reached after the Col du Télégraphe or the Col du Lautaret have been conquered, this makes this mountain pass one of the toughest Alpine passes in cycling history.
Profile of the ascent

The top of the pass can be reached from both the north and south sides. From the south side, two roads run uphill, meeting a few kilometers before the summit.
From the north

Profile of the ascent of the north face from Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne.

From Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, the length of the climb is 34.5 km with an average gradient of 6.6%. The ascent of the Col du Télégraphe covers the first 12 km with an average gradient of 7%; after a slight descent to the village of Valloire, the actual ascent of the Col du Galibier begins. The average gradient of the Galibier is 6.9%, with especially the last kilometers being spicy with a percentage of about 8.5% (towards the summit even over 10%).

Until 1976, the only transition to the other side of the pass consisted of a 370-m-long tunnel, which, however, was found to be in such poor condition that it was closed. A new road was built that goes all the way over the top of the pass and climbs an average of 10%. After renovation, the tunnel was reopened to vehicular traffic in 2002, with traffic lights regulating from which side traffic may use the tunnel. The tunnel is off limits to cyclists.
From the south

From the south, one can climb the pass from Briançon or from Bourg d’Oisans. From the southeast (Briançon), the climb is 37 km long. The first 14 kilometers up to Monêtier are actually more false flat, with a gradient averaging 3%. The 14.5 km to the Col du Lautaret at 2058 m altitude rise a bit more, but it remains relatively modest at 4 to 5%. After that, from the monument to Henri Desgrange, there remain 8 tough kilometers, where the gradient is between 9 and 12%.

One can also make the climb from the southwest, from Bourg d’Oisans (at the bottom of the Alpe d’Huez).
Climbs during the Tour de France

On this mountain pass in 1936, Theo Middelkamp laid the foundation for the first Dutch stage victory in the Tour de France. The year before, Francisco Cepeda had fallen hard during the descent, leading to a skull base fracture.

In 1998, Marco Pantani belittled Jan Ullrich. Italian Pantani flew away from Ullrich during hailstorms and low temperatures, losing 10 minutes at the summit.

In 2011, the col was climbed on two consecutive days for the first time, and the first of those two climbs involved finishing at the summit of the Galibier for the first time in history. At the top of the Galibier, it was Andy Schleck who won overwhelmingly ahead of his brother Fränk and Cadel Evans.

In 2013, the Galibier was climbed during the fifteenth stage of the Tour of Italy. Due to poor weather conditions, the stage was shortened to 4.2 kilometers below the summit of the col. The finish was at the monument to Marco Pantani. Italian Giovanni Visconti won the stage.

In 2015, it was planned to climb the Galibier but it did not happen because a tunnel was about to collapse, so the route changed and went over the Croix de Fer.[1]
Passages in the Tour de France since 1947
Year Stage Category First above
2011 19 HC Andy Schleck
2011 18 HC Andy Schleck
2008 17 HC Stefan Schumacher
2007 9 HC Mauricio Soler
2006 16 HC Michael Rasmussen
2005 11 HC Aleksandr Vinokoerov
2003 8 HC Stefano Garzelli
2002 16 HC Santiago Botero
2000 15 HC Pascal Hervé
1999 9 HC José Luis Arrieta
1998 15 HC Marco Pantani
1993 10 HC Tony Rominger
1992 14 HC Franco Chioccioli
1989 17 HC Gert-Jan Theunisse
1987 21 HC Pedro Muñoz
1986 18 HC Luis Herrera
1984 18 HC Francisco Rodríguez
1980 17 HC Johan De Muynck
1979 17 HC Lucien Van Impe
1974 11 1 Vicente López Carril
1973 8 1 Luis Ocaña
1972 14a 1 Joop Zoetemelk
1969 10 1 Eddy Merckx
1967 10 1 Julio Jimenez
1966 16 1 Julio Jimenez
1964 8 1 Federico Bahamontes
1959 18 2 Charly Gaul
1957 10 1 Marcel Janssens
1955 8 1 Charly Gaul
1954 19 1 Federico Bahamontes
1952 11 1 Fausto Coppi
1948 14 2 Lucien Teisseire
1947 8 1 Fermo Camellini
Panorama

Vanaf de top voert een wandelpad naar een uitzichtpunt op 2704 m.
