Lukmanierpass – Disentis
Description
The Lukmanier Pass (Italian: Passo del Lucomagno / Rhetoromanic: Cuolm Lucmagn) is a 1916 m high mountain pass, linking the Italian-speaking Valle di Blenio with the German- and Rhetoromanic-speaking Surselva (Vorderrheintal). The name of the pass is probably derived from the Latin lucus magnus (great forest). The border between the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Grisons runs at the pass height. The route was already used by the Romans and played a major role during the Great Migration. The current road was built in 1877. The descent to Disentis goes through Val Medel. For the first few kilometers, the road lies in an avalanche gallery along Lago di Santa Maria. The descent to the Vorderrhein Valley is easy. After the village of Curaglia, the wild gorge of Medelserschlücht or Las Ruinas is passed.
