Gulperberg AGR
Description
The Gulperberg or Gulpenerberg is a hill in the Heuvelland located near Gulpen in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg. On top of the Gulperberg is the 1935 concrete Marian monument by sculptor Charles Vos and architect Piet Gerrits.
The easiest way to climb Gulper Mountain is via the King of Spain, this name dates back to the Eighty Years’ War. The Spanish king is said to have occupied the hill for some time then. The climbs via the King of Spain, the west side and the east side have been included several times in the cycling classic Amstel Gold Race. The climb via the west side is then climbed once as the fifteenth climb, between Eperheide and the Plettenberg. The climb via the east side is also climbed once, as the twenty-sixth climb, between the Loorberg and the Kruisberg.
In 2014, the climb was part of the 7th stage of the Eneco Tour. A monument to Limburg cycling journalist Jean Nelissen has stood at the top of the west and east sides since 2016. Source Wikipedia
