Beschrijving

The Puy de Dôme is a large lava dome and one of the youngest volcanoes in the Massif Central in Auvergne, the central-southern part of France, with an altitude of 1464 meters. The volcano belongs to the Chaîne des Puys. The Romans built a temple dedicated to Mercury on it.

The summit of the Puy de Dôme formed a finishing point of a stage of the Tour de France 14 times. In 1975 it was the finish of the fourteenth stage and it was in this stage that Eddy Merckx received a punch to his liver, which was later at the root of his defeat. In 2023, for the first time since 1988, there was a finish of a tour stage on the Puy de Dôme.
